This article from Nextgov says that CNN will be allowed to use UAV's for video journalism. If the big media companies band together they should have the weight to steer the FAA into adopting reasonable rules governing the use of UAV's. Maybe your yearbook/journalism teacher might be interested in teaming up with you to purchase a quadcopter for your school!

Here is a White House petition regarding the use of small UAV's.
I found it after joining the United States Association of Unmanned Aerial Videographers. "The mission of the United States Association of Unmanned Aerial Videographers (UAVUS) is to foster safe use of airways by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to create a vibrant economic opportunity by responsibly using UAVs for aerial imaging without violating or infringing on the safety and privacy rights of others." http://uavus.org/ The FAA launched a new website (Know Before You Fly) and video for the 2014 holiday season to help educate the new wave of unmanned aircraft users that will be purchasing a quadcopter for Christmas. It is worth a look through. This is a really excited promo from DJI that highlights how the UCLA football team has been using the Phantom 2 Vision + to film their practices. "The FAA wants to require that all operators of commercial drones be certified to fly manned aircraft in addition to tiny drones. - See more at: http://www.studiodaily.com/2014/12/faa-may-require-full-pilots-license-drone-flight/"
It seems to me that the quadcopter community needs to work with the FAA to develop a specific pilots license for our specific devices (small, unmanned aerial vehicles design to video/photograph from the sky). Does anyone know of an effort out there to do this? SkyPixel.com is a community that connects aerial photographers and filmmakers from around the world. Here you can share, view, and collaborate on aerial projects, and build a reputation for yourself or your business. I got to preview the DJI Aspire 1 today at the CopterShop demo event at the Seattle Center. It is amazing. Hits the sweet spot between pro features and easy to use. I also met some great pilots/videographers. The guys from Vivid Aerial Ascent http://www.vividaa.com were really interesting to talk to about their approach to the business end. This is an inspirational collection of quad copter videos. Nothing new here but a great way to spend a 5 minute break during your work day. The Verge has a good review of the DJI Inspire One. Check out their written article and this video at: http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/12/7210621/dji-inspire-one#
