Our program is currently trying to make the choice of purchasing the new Phantom 3 or an Inspire 1. Here are a couple interesting resources that might help you make the same choice. Of course, if money was unlimited, I would simply get both! I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Here is a great article from Provideo that includes an interesting summary of the DOT and FAA's new proposed rules for sUAS and a great infographic on UAV safety. KEEP CALM: The FAA and sUAVs/Drone Rules Updated Please join our group of educators interested in developing aerial video/photography in our schools. Just send me your Google Plus account information so I can send you an invitation. Check out the new article I recently wrote for School Video News.
On Wednesday, April 8th, DJI announced two new copters.
Professional ($1,250): 4K Camera Advanced ($1,000): 1080p Camera Both feature new indoor positioning sensors, improved GPS and the new technology from the inspire controller and DJI Pilot app. The new controller and app is a huge improve and mirrors the technology used in the more expensive Inspire 1. My favorite features include the automatic take off/landing button and the ability to point the camera at a subject and have it follow it. Here is a great article from Engadget: DJI's Phantom 3 brings 4K recording to its most popular drone I just wanted to let everyone know about a killer deal that the Coptershop.com is currently running. The DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ is now just $1099 and you can add an extra battery for just $70 and a Fearless Backpack for just $99. If you are thinking of getting into aerial filmmaking this is the package I would recommend unless you have some money to burn and want to step up to the Inspiration. Remember to use the code "EDCOPTERS" for a discount. If you are in the Puget Sound I can't recommend these guys highly enough. I had an issue with my copter the other day and 10 minutes after my visit to the shop I was back up and running at NO charge! I love the term "Cinedrones" but with the negative connotation that drones now have would like to tweak this into "Cinecopters" to combine the idea of cinema and aerial filmmaking. Reguardless, this show reel of films featured in the New York City Drone Film Festival.
I just got back from NCCE where I met a group of enthusiastic educators that are working on the same thing. Bringing aerial photography/videography to their students. Join our group by competing this "Registration form." I met a middle school teacher, Randy Cash, now has a "fleet" of quad copters for training and filming. His students are so excited they are the ones bringing him articles and research on the topic! Glenn Whitcomb, a long time pilot and Academy of Model Aeronautics suggested that membership in this organization can provide millions in liability insurance. Here is the short video of the convention center I made on the morning of the conference.
I had the opportunity to talk with a group of about 20 other educators interested in aerial videography at the TCEA convention in Austin, Texas this last week. Many of them are in the same boat as I am, just trying to figure out how to integrate this new technology into our classrooms. I am hoping to form a group of educators that would like to work on developing guidelines and curriculum. Below is a short video I shot around the convention center when I was scouting out the area. This is a great example of highlighting a city from a series of aerial views. I hope you can generate some cool ideas of how you can use your quadcopter to make a promo video of your home town. Just make sure you follow all the safety procedures and policies. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/01/22/calgary-quadcopter-video_n_6525966.html |
